An Uninvited Guest

What would you do if a giant baboon turned the handle of your back door and opened it, sauntered into your kitchen as if he owned the place, jumped up onto the counter and begins to inhale your freshly baked buns? Probably something similar to Sophie’s friend Ella, who, after alerting the other girls (in the living room decorating for Christmas!) that there was a huge baboon hanging out on the kitchen counter, began to bang her water bottle against the wall. The other girls joined in yelling at it to leave. Unlike many in our world today, baboons instinctively know the difference between men and women, so he was only slightly amused by all their commotion. Seeing another bag full of buns however, he decided he had had enough of all the noise, grabbed the bag, jumped off the counter, and walked out.

We’re somewhat used to monkeys entering our house looking to steal food and leave a mess on their way out, but baboons stealthily opening up our doors, walking in and helping themselves is new for us. Hope it’s not what the author of Hebrews had in mind with entertaining angels unawares!

This term has gone really well for both RVA and Moffat, and it has made such a difference without all the COVID protocols from previous terms. We have one more week of classes followed by a week of final exams, and then Departure Day – when most of you will still be recovering from Thanksgiving turkey!

Thankfully Pray

  • We rejoice and thank God for sending rain, as we’ve been experiencing a drought in Kenya. Keep praying for more rain!
  • Thankful for Jonathan’s 6 Bible students from Kenya and 1 from Uganda.
  • Simon, one of the Moffat students he mentors serves at Rift Valley Hope, a ministry in the valley that rescues vulnerable children and helps families through Christ-centered care. Jonathan got to attend their 10 year anniversary celebration of ministry.
  • Pray for so many Kenyans suffering due to the drought and the economy.
  • We have a Tanzanian friend, Gideon (he used to teach us Kiswahili) who is back in Tanzania working among the predominantly Muslim Rangi people in Tanzania. He shared stories of individuals coming to Christ and having their lives transformed by the grace of God. But life is also very hard and his wife has been dealing with an unknown sickness for almost two years. Please pray for Gideon and Rose.
  • Pray for students and staff to find the right balance between diligence in study/work and rest as events and workload actually increase as the term comes to a close.
  • We continue to seek the Lord for what’s next after Sophie graduates this summer. We believe the ministry needs in Africa will only increase in the coming decades. Pray for us as we travel to Ethiopia in early December to help us explore some possibilities. To be continued…
  • We look forward to all our kids coming in December for a Kenyan Christmas together!
